During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, promising “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
