A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
