A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
