Approximately twenty-five thousand homes in south-east Queensland woke up lacking electricity on the start of the week after severe thunderstorms passed over the state, bringing wind gusts reaching over 100 km/h.

Large Ice Stones and Widespread Impact

Residents witnessed substantial frozen pellets reaching sizes of 7cm in some areas. The Bureau of Meteorology announced that different parts across Queensland had been impacted by large hailstones.

Utility workers were working to restore electricity service throughout the impacted areas, with approximately seventy teams deployed to address the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victorian Weather Woes

Meanwhile, approximately one thousand energy customers in Victoria also experienced power outages after Melbourne saw its heaviest rainfall in over 500 days.

State Emergency Services responded to nearly 600 emergency reports across the area, mostly for building damage but also for collapsed vegetation and inundation.

• Hoppers Crossing area - multiple rescue reports
• Wyndham area - 179 calls for assistance

At the height on the previous day, in excess of twenty-eight thousand electricity consumers in Victoria were without power.

Meteorological Predictions

Humid circumstances were predicted to continue along significant areas of eastern Queensland this week as a low-pressure trough continued to attract humidity against the coastal areas.

Tuesday was expected to become the wettest day, with continued storm activity anticipated across different parts of both areas.

Health Warning

Health officials alerted that there was an increased chance of weather-related respiratory issues across the northern rural areas, particularly given the current weather patterns.
